Clear acrylic sealed tube, 3-1/8" dia x 8" tall, divided into two equal chambers. The dividing wall has a hole in the center, and the tube has a quantity of viscous violet goo (glycerin?) in it that fills one chamber about 3/4 full. Stand the tube on end with the full chamber up, and over a 10 minute period the goo will ooze from the upper to the lower chamber, blowing bubbles and dribbling droplets in the process, all in slow motion. The action is somewhat reminiscent of a lava lamp, without the heat and light, and with a mixed air and goo chamber that yields much more interesting patterns. Mesmerizing, disgusting, fascinating, soothing. If you only need a little soothing you may want to try the same thing in a smaller size: 2-1/8" diameter x 4-7/8" tall. It comes in a variety of colors from which we will choose yours.

Despite parental advice, here's a good reason to sit in in a dark room and think small. This Plasma Storm isn't as large as a standard plasma ball, so not only is it much more affordable -- the effect is concentrated and startling. The black plastic base has a switch. Turn it on at which point the 3" dia plastic globe (think baseball size) is filled with blue stems that flare to pink, looking like dozens of electric flowers searching for a way out. Very cool. Comes with a 6-ft power cord with transformer.

Or hot-flash deflector, or optical-illusion demonstration device. Or toy. Yes, to all of the above. Our 5-1/2" long brushed-aluminum, black-ink ballpoint pen has a (removable) little plastic fan blade in its noggin. Cool off at work, blow crumbs off the desk, or just turn it on and move the fan in and out from your computer screen and watch the phantom blades slow, stop or even reverse in the optical illusion called the "wagon wheel effect." Runs on a button-cell battery, included.

Roto-fun for the desktop. The flashing flying saucer defies gravity as it runs around and upside down on the Möbius-like chrome rails, which tilt and turn atop a 5-1/2" dia black-plastic base.
